Small Group Personal Training (SGPT): The Cost-Effective, Supportive, and Varied Way to Achieve Your Fitness Goals

When it comes to getting fit, you have two great choices: working out one-on-one with a personal trainer or joining a small group personal training (SGPT) program. While both options have their own advantages, we think that small group personal training is the better choice for most people. Here’s why:

One-on-One Personal Training

Pros:

  • Customized program: A personal trainer will design a workout that’s tailored to your fitness level and goals.
  • Personal attention: With a personal trainer, you’ll get one-on-one attention to make sure you’re doing exercises correctly and safely.
  • Flexible scheduling: You can schedule sessions at a time that works for you.

Cons:

  • Cost: Personal training can be pricey, and it may not fit everyone’s budget.
  • Limited social interaction: One-on-one personal training can be isolating, and you miss out on the social benefits of working out with a group.
  • Lack of motivation: Without the support and encouragement of others, it can be hard to stay motivated to work out regularly.

Small-Group Personal Training (SGPT)

Pros:

  • Inclusive and supportive environment: In a small group personal training program, you’ll work out with a supportive and welcoming group of people who are all at different fitness levels. Research has shown that exercising in a group can lead to greater enjoyment and social support, which can increase adherence to an exercise program. (1,2)
  • Cost-effective: Small-Group PT sessions will cost you less money since most gyms are able to offer a more competitive rate when more people are training at once, making it more accessible for everyone.
  • Varied workouts: A good small group personal training program will offer a variety of exercises and equipment, ensuring you won’t get bored with the same routine.
  • Can be a lot of fun!!! (especially once you get to know your group or have a group of your own).

Cons:

  • Possibly less customization at times: Your workout may not be as personalized as a one-on-one session, but it will still be designed to help you reach your fitness goals. Although we find that with a group size of not more than 6, many gyms are still able to deliver a pretty customized experience.
  • You don’t get 100% personal attention: With a small group, your trainer has to divide their attention between group members, but they will still be available to correct your form and offer guidance and motivation.
  • Less flexible schedules: You’ll have to work with the gym’s schedule for the group session, but the upside is that you’ll have a set time to work out, making it easier to stay committed.

In summary, small group personal training is a great option for those looking for a supportive and inclusive environment while still getting a quality workout. With a lower cost, varied workouts, and a welcoming community, it’s a fantastic way to achieve your fitness goals while having fun along the way.
